 Matthew 14:22–33. Walking on the Sea

1.       Matthew 14:22–33. Identify  what the reaction of the Apostles was when they first saw the Savior walking on the water toward them.

-they were troubled and cried out in fear.

2.    What did Peter’s response indicate about him?

-Peter asked to walk out on water with Christ, this indicated that Peter had faith that it could be done.

 3.    According to Matthew 14:30, why did Peter begin to sink?

-He saw the wind and how bad the storm was. This is when he began to doubt and sink.

 4.    What did Peter do when he began to sink?

-Peter cried to the Lord asking him to save him.

What word in the verses describes the expediency or the timing when Jesus responded to Peter’s request?

-Jesus immediately reached out to catch him and then he asked Peter why he doubted.

5.    Doctrine and Covenants 88:67. 

-“ And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things.”

If we have our eyes focused on Christ and never look away or become distracted then Satan can never temp us and we will be able to discern truth from error and wrong from right. It is easy to look away for a moment but we need to immediately turn to the Savior for help just as Peter did and Jesus will reach out to save us immediately. If we turn away for too long we may sink a lot deeper than we want to.

 Matthew 18:1–14. “Become as Little Children”

1.        Matthew 18:3–4 and Doctrine and Covenants 78:17–18.  We are little children because we cannot comprehend all that the Lord has in store for us. Our brains are not capable of doing this so we must trust in our Savior and he will lead us back to him. We must be humble and submissive willing to submit to the Savior, just as a little child is.

 2.  Mosiah 3:19  lists the ways in which we are to become as little children.

“submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.”

President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency taught: “To be like a child is not to be childish. It is to be like the Savior, who prayed to His Father for strength to be able to do His will and then did it. Our natures must be changed to become as a child”
